Here’s some good news for you fathers who are still raising kids in the second half. (I know you’re out there.) Check out “Watch D.O.G.S.” (Dads of Great Students) – a program designed to “Engage men, inspire children, reduce bullying and enhance the educational environment at your school.” The concept is simple – kids need positive male role models. Interested men are asked to volunteer one day per year in grades K-12. Under the guidance of the individual school, the men are involved in everything from playground time to classroom assistance.
In a survey of the 50 schools participating in this program in 2003, 83% felt that this program was a “valuable component in the school’s effort to promote a positive learning environment for students.” There are currently more than 2,659 schools in 46 states and Washington D.C. who support a Watch D.O.G.S. program. With this kind of growth, something is clearly working and working well!
